Look up a definition of the term “department store” on the site of IADS, The International Association of Department Stores. IADS contains also an overview of the Association and the history of department stores, as well as a list of its members and a list of major department stores in the world, organized by country.
The International Council of Shopping Centers publishes on its site global retail news and research available to members only. The free content on the site includes statistics on mall sales and holiday sales, directory of links to malls, shopping centers and department stores, periodical updates on government regulations and legislation affecting the industry, and articles from the publication “Shopping Centers Today” and “Value Retail News.” Department store news is published by the Visual Store.
A major trade publication is Chain Store Age -- a magazine for retail executives featuring mainly stories and special reports related to big store chains and department stores. It also provides information on retailing trends and its regular sections cover retail technology, shopping center development, marketing, store design, and other retail business related topics. Stores Magazine offers selections from the current issue of the publication and a five-year archive. Retail Traffic is an online magazine, which features in addition a directory of stores classified by product. ShoppingCenters.com provides access to two publications: Shopping Center Digest and the Directory of Major Malls, featuring samples of the data that they provide. Selections from Canadian Retailer are available through the Retail Council of Canada. The National Retail Federation features on its site press releases, U.S. regional sales estimates, and legal and regulatory information affecting the retail sector. The top 200 global retailers (including department stores) are ranked by Stores Magazine, which also provides some statistics and survey data. Monthly retail statistics is available from the Census Bureau. Department store statistics is offered as part of the Census Bureau Inventory and Retail Trade survey. Sale statistics for the top ten metropolitan areas in the US is available from AdSite Market Data.
Legislative information concerning the retail industry can be obtained from the Government Relations section of the National Retail Federation's site. Retail Industry Leaders Association publishes industry news and legislative updates.
Shopping Guide provides a list of department stores in the UK. A directory of store planning and design firms is available from Institute of Store Planners. The National Research Bureau offers a number of online or CD-ROM products such as, for example, The Shopping Center Directory.
